We are continually learning how to care for Joglo Gumuk and its surroundings in ways that support both the environment and our local community.
Our approach includes:
- preserving traditional Javanese architecture by restoring old timber houses and building with reclaimed wood, recycled materials and locally sourced bamboo
- working with local craftspeople and family-run businesses
building a team of people from our village - creating opportunities for guests to experience local culture through the people who live here
- preparing vegetarian and vegan breakfasts with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients whenever possible and choosing organic products and cage-free eggs where available
- serving coffee roasted in small batches from beans sourced directly from local farmers
- providing refillable natural and locally produced soaps, dish soap and mosquito repellent to reduce single-use plastic
- energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the property. Part of the property’s electricity is supplied by a hybrid solar energy system
- composting organic waste
- caring for our gardens in ways that encourage biodiversity
- No single use water bottles are available
- We encourage guests to turn off their lights when not in use
- Change of towels only when guests request
- Rechargeable torches in our rooms
- No baths to conserve water.
- Organic fertilizers & soil enhancers
- Edible and medicinal plants in the garden
