Ketupat is a traditional Javanese rice cake cooked inside a beautifully woven pouch of young coconut leaves. Often prepared for Eid celebrations and other festive occasions, it symbolizes togetherness and forgiveness and is commonly served with curries, satay, and other savoury dishes.
In this workshop, you will learn how to weave your own ketupat pouch from young coconut leaves, fill it with rice, and cook it over a traditional wood-fired stove.
While the ketupat is cooking, you will prepare sayur tempeh— fermented soy beans and seasonal vegetables simmered in a fragrant coconut gravy. Once everything is ready, enjoy this traditional meal for lunch or dinner.
