Yogyakarta and its surrounding region have much to explore. We work closely with Joko, an experienced local driver and guide, who offers a range of tours that can be booked directly with him.
Together, we have also developed two excursions with a focus on nature, local communities and cultural heritage. The tours can be adapted based on your preferences.
ORCHID FOREST MERAPI HIKE – MERAPI COFFEE – MUSEUM ULEN SENTALU
Discover the rich biodiversity of Mount Merapi. Begin with a guided hike of approximately two hours through the orchid conservation forest on the slopes of Merapi, led by Pak Musimin, the initiator of the local orchid conservation program.
Along the way, learn about endangered native orchid species, medicinal plants and the ongoing efforts to protect the unique ecosystems of the mountain.
After the walk, enjoy a cup of locally grown coffee or tea before continuing to a restaurant for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Museum Ullen Sentalu, renowned for its exceptional collection of Javanese history, art and culture, offering a deeper understanding of the traditions and royal heritage of Central Java.

Giriloyo Batik Village – Imogiri Royal Cemetery – Bumi Langit Permaculture
Begin your day in Giriloyo Batik Village, where generations of artisans have practised the art of batik tulis (hand-drawn batik). Closely connected to the nearby Imogiri Royal Cemetery, the village has long produced fine batik for the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Visit a local workshop and, if you wish, join a batik class (approximately two hours) to learn the traditional techniques.
Continue to the Imogiri Royal Cemetery, the resting place of the kings and queens of the Mataram Kingdom. Climb the historic stone staircase and learn about the history and traditions of this important royal site. If your visit coincides with the cemetery’s opening hours, you will also have the opportunity to enter parts of the cemetery. Please note that specific dress regulations apply, and we will provide you with the necessary information in advance.
The day ends in the hills of Gunungkidul with lunch at Warung Bumi, part of the Bumi Langit Institute, a permaculture community. Enjoy a seasonal meal prepared with locally grown ingredients and, if available, take a short walk through the gardens to learn more about their approach to regenerative farming.
